Tekka
Finest Japanese fusion and sushi with the longest tradition in a secret corner of Radnička
Tekka offers a great selection of sushi and sashimi with local and international ingredients, with a capably assembled wine list, with probably the best price-to-quality ratio in Zagreb.
The restaurant is situated in the business part of town on the bottom floor of an office building. Minimalistic, mostly black space, with pleasant background music and an open kitchen, so you can see who makes your food is all Tekka needs to be amazing. Waiters are knowledgeable and most of them have been working here since the restaurant opened.
Chef Tomislav Pirš commands a fairly large menu, pairing international and local ingredients in balanced, interesting combinations of flavors and spices, using mainly Japanese cooking techniques. Their cooking is creative, but with strong consideration for the market to which they cater.
TEKKA can accommodate up to 40 guests for lunch or dinner.
What is served
The menu consists of 5 salads, 6 appetizers, 17 set sushi menus created by the chef, and a small (4 kinds of fish) and large (8 kinds of fish) sashimi menu.
Guests can choose from the individual roll selection: Hosomaki, Uramaki, Big Rolls, and Tempura, as well as Tepanyaki Japanese style grill. Miso soup, and light Dashi clear soup with Udon and Tom Yam Kung complete the menu.
After woks and noodles, we come to the Fusion section of the menu, where the chef shows his skill and creativity across 9 appetizers and 6 mains.
Next are woks and noodles, before we come to the Fusion section with their 9 appetizers and 6 mains, an expression of the chefs’ creativity, local ingredients, and Japanese cooking techniques.
All of the dishes are well balanced and not too spicy. The kitchen looks after the guests, leaving them a few minutes pause between the dishes.
The cocktail list covers 8 classics. There is a sizable selection of spirits and liqueurs.
The wine list is not large, but adequate for the menu. You can find a fitting pairing or ask for a recommendation from the waiters since Tekka offers sake, plum wine, and rice wine too.
Michelin guide Croatia recommends them, Gault&Millau gave Tekka 2 chef’s hats and Falstaff awarded them 1 fork.
Tekka runs their own delivery service.
What our chefs had
We started our visit to Tekka with a selection of sushi rolls and we were impressed straight away with the quality of their nigiri unagi which was tasty and fatty just the right amount. The second roll, uramaki with prawn tempura, had a nice crunch and flavors, but the playful heat in the following spicy tuna uramaki showed Tekka chefs in top form.
Next, we tried beef gyoza with spring onion, chili oil, and ginger, which was perfectly made but lacked a bit of fat and moisture to be perfect.
Soft shell crab tempura with chilly mayo was crunchy and went amazingly well with chill mayo and lime juice.
For our third dish, we went with a classic – Tori Teriyaki, chicken fried in sesame and soy sauce, with ginger.
The final plate was salmon steak with sesame butter and nori algae, which surprised us with a harmony of aromas and size, showing the chef’s hand and concept. Asparagus, cherry tomatoes, bok choy, shiitake, sweet-sour chili sauce – everything worked well in this dish.
We had gentle Japanese Asahi beer with our sushi and the waiter recommended the wine.
Everything, food and drinks, came to a little bit less than 100 euros.
